Hahn Motor Truck Company deluxe bus photographs

Abstract:

Hahn Motor Truck Company was a manufacturer of fire trucks and buses. The company built its own chassis and commercial trucks such as delivery vehicles and construction vehicles. This small collection consists of three views of an unoccupied Hahn Motor Truck Company deluxe bus: two exteriors and one interior.

Harry R. Hippler collection of Pennsylvania Railroad negatives

Abstract:

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was the largest railroad in the United States in terms of corporate assets and traffic from the last quarter of the nineteenth century until the decline of the northeast's and midwest's dominance of manufacturing. Harry Richmond Hippler (1875-1958) was a pharmacist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and an avid amateur photographer. This collection contains negatives primarily of Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) train cars, both interior and exterior views. There are also images of train tracks, bridges, construction and other railroad related images. The bulk of the photographs date from the 1910s through the 1940s. It is possible that Harry R. Hippler was the photographer of some of the photographs in the collection.

Harry Tubis New Castle County and Chester County aerial photographs

Abstract:

The collection consists of 46 nitrate negatives and one folio filled with 46 vertical aerial photographs of New Castle County, Delaware and the surrounding areas, including nearby southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. The flight altitude was approximately 25,000 feet and the resulting vertical photographs had a scale of approximately 1 inch to 3,100 feet.

Hayden & Crouch chairs and rockers photographs

Abstract:

Hayden & Crouch were in the chair manufacturing business for a ten-year period from 1888 to 1898 in Rochester, New York. No mention is made of Hayden & Crouch after the 1898 directory. The album contains pictures of thirty-five wooden chairs, some with casters, some rocking chairs.

The Hay’s Fruit Juice Company produced “Hay’s Five Fruit,” fruit juice syrup used to make and flavor beverages and desserts. The company was founded in 1900 in Portland, Maine. The Hay’s Fruit Juice Company album contains photographs and advertisements. The photographs are primarily of the factory’s interiors.

The Hazard Powder Company was one of the largest gunpowder and explosives manufacturers in the United States in the late-nineteenth century. This group consists of six mounted photographs showing unidentified buildings and the dam at the Hazard Powder Company in Connecticut. An unrelated print shows a covered bridge photographed in winter that crossed the Brandywine River at 16th Street in Wilmington, Delaware.

This small collection consists of fourteen photographs of views of Hazard Powder Company buildings. None of the images are dated, however, they appear to date from circa 1890s to the 1900s.

Henry du Pont (1812-1889) was the second son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) and senior partner of E.I du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1850 to 1889. The collection consists of materials relating to the descendants of Henry and Louisa Gerhard du Pont. Primarily, the collection consists of portraits and other photographs of their daughters Evelina, Ellen, Louisa, Sara, Victorine, Sophie and other family members.

Abstract:

Helen Baker Cushman (1922-) was the founder and manager of H.M. Baker Associates, consultants in business archives and records from 1958 to 1993, headquartered in Westfield, New Jersey. In the course of conducting her business, Cushman collected a wide variety of business publications, trade cards, ephemera, and other memorabilia with special emphasis on world expositions. She also assembled her own general picture archive for use in her business.

Helen Lasser collection of matchbook covers

Abstract:

A match cover or a matchbook cover is a thin piece of cardboard that is folded around a set of match sticks. Chemist, John Walker (1781-1859) invented the match stick in 1827. Joshua Pusey (1842-1906?), an inventor and attorney patented matchbook covers in 1892. Within a short time hotels, restaurants, airlines, and all kinds of stores began advertising using matchbook covers. This is a small collection of matchbook covers from restaurants, hotels, and various local businesses.

Henry S. Rothrock collection of Experimental Station photographs

Abstract:

Herny S. Rothrock (1906-1986) was a DuPont research chemist. In 1930, he joined the staff of the Experimental Station of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. He obtained fifty-six patents, chiefly in the field of polymer chemistry and served ten years at liaison manager in the Central Research Department, retiring in 1971. This collection consists primarily of photos relating to DuPont's Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware. There are group photos of new employees in the Central Research Department, committees and conferences and press release photos from the 1964 New York World's Fair.

The Hercules Powder Company was one of the companies created from the break up of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours "powder trust" in 1911 as ruled by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. In its early years as a separate company, it continued to produce explosives and dynamite and used advertising styles and devices. This item is a poster depicting a World War I soldier leaving home and telling his hunting dog, "Not this trip Old Pal."

Hercules Powder Company calendar illustrations and Laflin and Rand display cards

Abstract:

The Hercules Powder Co. was one of companies created from the break up of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours "powder trust" in 1911 as ruled by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. The Laflin and Rand Powder Company, one of the largest gunpowder manufacturers in the nineteenth century, was formed from several predecessor companies, including the Laflin Powder Company and the Smith & Rand Powder Company. This collection consists of a Hercules Powder Company calendar from 1919 and an undated illustration from a company calendar. There are also reproductions of a group of three different display card advertisements for Laflin & Rand Powder Company, probably for point-of-sale or counter display.

Hill-Chase & Co., also know as the Hill-Chase Steel Company, was formed in February 1929 by Charles H. Chase (1884-1967), John J. Hill, Jr. (1891-1978), and several other employees of Edgar T. Ward Steel Service Center in Philadelphia. The company was well known for its innovations in steel. This is a small collection of copy photographs of the facilities and employees.

Kevlar is a synthetic fiber developed by chemists Stephanie Kwolek (1923-2014), Paul Morgan (1911-1992), and Herbert Blades in 1965 while working at the DuPont Company. The oral histories presented here document the research and development processes that transformed Kevlar from a novel polymer in the laboratory to a life-changing product in the marketplace.

Holeproof Hosiery Company brochure

Abstract:

Founded in 1901, Holeproof Hosiery Company was a Milwaukee, Wisconsin firm that produced men's and women's hosiery, underwear, lingerie and men's pajamas. Carl Freschl (1842-1911) was the founder and his son, Edward Freschl (1877-1930) was the first president of the company. This advertisement brochure for the Holeproof Hosiery Company consists of two Illustrations that show a woman putting on shoes (back) and a woman on the phone (front). The inside contains an a photograph of a woman demonstrating the "extra stretch top" of the stockings.

Hologic, Inc. is a developer and manufacturer of medical X-ray imaging instruments with a primary focus on mammography and women's health. The company was founded in 1985 by S. David Ellenbogen (1938-2001) and Jay A. Stein (1942-) in Bedford, Massachusetts. This oral history collection brings together interviews with the individuals involved in inventing, researching, and commercializing digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis at DuPont, Sterling and Hologic.

Hoopes Brothers & Darlington began in West Chester in 1867 manufacturing wooden spokes for wheels. By the eighteen-eighties it was one of the largest wooden wheel makers in the country. Includes portraits of Thomas Hoopes, then head of the company.

Hospitality soap wrappers collection

Abstract:

Soap traces its history all the way back to the Babylonians in 2800 BC. However, bar soap only dates back to the late eighteenth century. The use of bar soap became the norm in the mid-nineteenth century. By this time soap could be mass produced and mass marketed. Many of the large bar soap companies were established during this time. This collection consists of 155 hospitality soap wrappers that have been flattened. The soap wrappers generally contain the name of the hotel, city and state, as well as a logo or graphic of some kind. Most wrappers include the brand name and product name, though a few do not have any information about the soap listed on the wrapper. All of the hotels are in the United States, not all of the states are represented in the collection. This collection would be useful for those researching package design, logos, or the soap industry. Potentially the collection also indicates relationships between specific hotel companies and their personal hygiene vendors.

The Hotel Varadero Internacional, built in 1950, was next to Xanadu, Irenée du Pont's (1876-1963) estate that was built in Cuba around 1930. The postcard gives a black and white photographic view of the entrance to the driveway to the Hotel Varadero, with the hotel in the background.

170 Breck's Lane was owned by William Winder "Chick” Laird, Jr. (1910-1989) and served as workers' housing. Laird was the director of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and a financial advisor, starting his own brokerage firm in Wilmington, Delaware. This collection contains twenty photographic prints of various interior and exterior architectural views of 170 Breck's Lane before architectural rennovations by the owner.

Abstract:

A needlebook is a small pocket-sized case used for keeping sewing needles in; it is made of fabric or paper and folded to look like a book. The trend of making needlebooks began in the 1800s and rose in popularity through the 1950s. The needlebook would store all the various sizes and types of needles needed for a project. This small collection consists of six packages containing sewing needles, with illustrated covers.

The Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland is a multinational manufacturer of tobacco products, including multiple cigarette and cigar brands. Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) audiovisual materials

The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is a trade organization for industrial designers that promotes the impact of design on business, culture, and society. It advocates for the profession through providing educational opportunities and is an active member of the World Design Organization. IDSA was formed in 1965 with the merger of three predecessor organizations. The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) audiovisual materials document the members of the organization through images, sound recordings, and videos of events, primarily of the annual conference between 1980 and 2014. The files come from IDSA headquarters, primarily from Kristina Goodrich, who was executive director of IDSA from 1999 to 2006 and communication manager from 1981 to 1998. The collection has been arranged into seven series: IDSA conferences; IDSA office staff, board of directors, and committees; IDSA chapter events; Exhibits and other events; Industrial design files; Industrial/International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) winners; and IDSA publications.

The Inter-Society Color Council coordinates the activities of leading technical societies relating to the description, specification, and standardization of color, and promotes the practical application of this knowledge in science, art, and industry. Dorothy Nickerson (1900-1985) worked in the research laboratory of the Munsell Color Company from 1921-1926, and is known for her numerous contributions to the field of color science. This collection consists of materials from the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.

Interstate Commerce Commission railroad abandonment index

Irene Carpenter Draper photographs

Irene (Renee) Carpenter (1911-1991) was a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. She was the second child of R.R.M. Carpenter (1877-1949) and Margaretta Lammot du Pont (1884-1973) and a granddaughter of Lammot du Pont (1831-1884). The collection consists of photographs of Irene Carpenter Draper, as a child and as a young adult, and her extended family.

Irénée du Pont (1876-1963) was a chemical engineer. He began work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in 1903 in the Construction Division of the Black Powder Operating Department. After holding several positions within the company he went on to be the president of the DuPont Company. He served in this capacity from 1919 until 1926. The collection consists of photographs related to Irénée du Pont's family, personal interests, and involvement with organizations such as the Delaware Safety Council.

Irénée du Pont's Cuban estate "Xanadu" photographs

Xanadu was the name of the opulent Cuban estate of Irenee du Pont (1876-1963). He bought land on the Hicacos Peninsula of Cuba to build the four-story estate. This collection consists of photographs of the exterior and interior of the home near Varadero, Cuba.

Irv Koons (1922-2017) was a graphic artist, designer, and illustrator who became one of the leading consumer package designers of the twentieth century. James Crosby Brown, Jr., was born in Hartford, Conn., in 1929 and spent most of his life in Philadelphia, where he pursued a career in business. After retiring in 1981, he turned full-time to his life-long avocation of maritime history. This collection consists of copy photographs of steamboats, many on the Schuylkill River.

Capital Airlines was a commercial airline for the eastern, southern, southeastern, and midwestern United States from 1936 to 1961. It was the fifth largest airline in the United States. The airline was the first to offer service from the west to Washington D.C., coach class service, in-flight television, and jet-powered commercial aircraft. This collection includes materials related to Capital Airlines predecessor company, Clifford Ball Airlines, and materials created under its former name, Pennsylvania Central Airlines. There is also materials related to the Capital Airline Association. The collection documents the history of the airlines, its aircraft and employees.

Eastern Airlines was a major U.S. domestic airline from 1926 to 1991. It was considered to be one of the four largest carriers during the mid-twentieth century, the other three being American, TWA, and United. Eastern Airlines dominated the air travel market between New York and Florida from the 1930s through the 1950s. This small collection of Eastern Airlines photographs and ephemera predominantly reflects the company's aircraft fleet between 1938 and 1991. In addition, there are materials that document the company's route system and later decline. This collection has been arranged into three series: Photographs, Publications and ephemera, and Newspaper clippings and magazine articles.

Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) was the principal international airline in the United States for most of its existence and the nation's only international carrier before World War II. Pan Am was originally founded as Pan American Airways in 1927 as an international carrier only. On January 8, 1991, Pan American World Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company was subsequently dissolved and liquidated. This small collection of Pan American World Airways photographs and ephemera predominantly reflects the company's aircraft fleet between 1930 and 1991. In addition, there are materials that document the company's route system and later decline.

Abstract:

This handbill for the Jackson Park Garage on Stony Island Avenue in Chicago advertises its mechanical services and lists monthly specials for Ford 4, Chevrolet 6, and Pontiac 6 automobiles. The NRA (National Recovery Administration) eagle symbol is in the right corner. The National Recovery Administration was a U.S. government agency established during the Great Depression by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to stimulate business recovery through fair-practice codes. Companies that subscribed to the NRA codes were allowed to display a Blue Eagle emblem, as a symbol of cooperation with the NRA.
